A Long Distance Love Affair: How to go the Distance

It’s the stuff that great romance novels are made of. Boy meets girl, girl has to leave country but they’re willing to make things work despite the distance and a 2 hour time zone difference. The story line never fails to cause interest and yet, it remains a story that some people view as fairytale material. Yet, there are many people that have strengthened their relationships despite the odds.

You too can go the distance. It’s a matter of trust, a matter of communication and a few old school romances necessitates.

So, how do you go the distance? You may be considering immigrating to the country in which your partner resides. If so, there are many factors to consider. It’s not a simple process but it is very possible.

What are your options?
Consider applying for a Fiancé Visa
If you’re willing to propose, or you’ve been proposed to, applying for this visa may be a good option. A Fiancé Visa can only be approved for a limited period before to the intent of marriage. Proof of a relationship with a citizen of the destination country is needed. Consider this example that could be of assistance: a German woman has accepted a proposal to marry an American man. She is required to obtain a Fiancé Visa (also referred as a K-1 visa). This will allow her to enter the United States.

You’ll need the following documents
A valid passport, birth certificate, divorce or death certificate of any previous spouse, police certificate from all places lived in since the age of 16, a medical examination certificate, evidence of support, evidence of a valid relationship with the petitioner and photographs according to specifications. The beneficiary will be notified by the consular officer when the approved petition is received. The beneficiary will also be provided with the necessary forms and instructions to apply for a K Visa.

Consider applying for a Spousal Visa.

A Spousal Visa is granted to the spouse of a resident or citizen of a given country in order to enable the couple to settle in that country. An example of such visas is the United Kingdom’s EEA Family Permit.

You’ll need the following documents

For the K3 Spousal Visa (United States), Two copies of Form DS-156, Non-immigrant Visa Application, one DS-156K, Non-immigrant Fiancé Visa Application form, Police certificates from all places liven in since the age of 16 and birth certificates, marriage certificates for spouse, death and divorce certificates from any previous spouses, medical examination, medical examination (except vaccinations), A passport valid for travel to the United States and with a validity date at least six months beyond the applicant’s intended period of stay in the United States. You’ll also require two non-immigrant visa photo’s, two inches 50 x 50 mm square showing full face against a light background, proof of financial support (Form 1-134 Affidavit of Support may be requested) and payments of fees.
